A Sweet Fond Memory
|
When I was a little girl, I couldn't wait for Thanksgiving and Christmas
to come, but not only for the obvious reasons. They were the only
times of the year my mother made the most delicious dessert in the world!
She called it Heavenly Hash and it was a beloved annual tradition in my
childhood home. A simple mixture of marshmallows, crushed pineapple,
and real whipped cream, it was disgustingly sweet and full of
calories, but oh my, how we loved it! Just preparing it each year
was an adventure. Even though it would have been a lot easier, we
couldn't use the little bitty, miniature marshmallows, Momma's
rationale was that the raw edges of cut marshmallows more readily soaked
up the pineapple juice and whipped cream. So, we would cut
regular-sized marshmallows into quarters with a pair of scissors,
periodically dipping them into a glass of hot water to combat the
stickiness. It seemed to take forever but the anticipation of
eating it the next day far outweighed dealing with sticky fingers.
In later years, my sister introduced chopped maraschino cherries to the mixture and the results were just as delicious. Though I've tried, mine has never tasted quite as good as my mother's or my sister's. So, over the years, at my house it's been replaced with Watergate Salad, which is very similar, almost as good, and definitely as fattening. When we have Thanksgiving at my sister's though, it's still a great treat when she makes Heavenly Hash - delicious! |
