THE PENTAGON

The Pentagon is the nation's military command center and headquarters of the Department of Defense.  It is one of the world's largest office buildings.  Approximately 24,000 employees, both military and civilian, work there.

The attack on the Pentagon claimed the lives of 184 victims.  The attack destroyed at least four of the five "rings" that spiral around the massive office building.  It took slightly less than a year to rebuild but there is nothing that will ever take the place of  the lives that were  destroyed because of this senseless act. . .

As a tribute to the victims, and in defiance of the terrorists, construction crews engaged in a nearly 24-hour-per-day effort to rebuild and repair the extensive damage suffered by the Pentagon in the September 11 attack.   On Tuesday, June 11, 2002, workers fitted the final piece of limestone facade into the rebuilt section of the Pentagon.  The blackened stone was part of the original damaged facade  and  was engraved with the date.  Behind it officials placed a bronze "dedication capsule".  The capsule holds a plaque with the names of the 184 victims,  as well as other mementos.  The Defense Department is not calling the canister a time capsule because it is not meant to ever be removed.
